Each year brings new trends. While it’s not a good idea to chase after all the latest trends when building a home (you don’t want such a big investment to look dated too quickly) it is important to at least be aware of what’s in right now, so that you can incorporate a few trends that you love. So, what’s popular for 2017 so far?
Tile as a Focal Point
Realizing the big impact tile can have on the character of a space, homeowners are giving it center stage as a real focal point. To incorporate this trend into your kitchen, pick a tile you love, then take it all the way up the wall.
Subway Tile
It’s almost seems unnecessary to include it here, because it seems like it’s “trending” every year! It might just be the most classic and versatile of tile choices. Friendly to any budget and style, there’s very little not to love. For a fresh twist on this timeless choice, try it in a bold color, like this glossy black tub surround.
Hexagonal Tile Designs
Before we move on from talking about tile, if you’re looking for something less rectangular, geometrical designs are very big right now. In particular, hexagonal tiles are very popular in backsplashes as an interesting yet classic alternative.
“Poised Taupe”
As far as neutrals go, 2017 seems to be moving away from colder shades in favor of beige, taupe, and some warmer shades of gray. Sherwin Williams’ color of the year is “Poised Taupe” (SW 6039). As a fresh yet understated neutral, it’s a great choice when you’re selecting a wall color for your new home.
Utility Rooms Don’t Have to Be Utilitarian
When it comes to picking a room of the house to splurge on, homeowners have typically looked to their kitchen or master bath. But 2017 has been turning its attention to a room that’s often overlooked: the laundry room. After all, if you’re going to be doing laundry, it might as well be done in an elegant room you really love. If you’re looking for an area of your house to add a few upgrades to, why not consider switching to a quartz countertop, adding extra cabinets for storage, and picking out a stunning backsplash?
Lighting Fixtures With Retro Flair
Unique, retro lighting fixtures are very big this year. But you don’t have to scour antique stores and flea markets. Lighting companies offer many retro inspired designs. For example, check out these awesome mid-century inspired pendant lights.
Built-In Bars
Bar carts were very popular in 2016, and now it seems that built-in bars are rising to take their place. Built-ins have an advantage in giving a home a custom, finished look. And they don’t need to take up very much space. Look at this slim example. It has a lot of vertical storage, but the actual footprint is small.
Those are just a few of the trends that have been predicted for 2017 so far. As the year progresses, we’ll certainly see more cropping up. In the meantime, let’s hear from you: what rising trends have you noticed this year? Which 2017 trend is your favorite right now?
